The Apparel Search Company has contemplated for many years the best method to define the "Fashion Industry". Our first thought was to classify the words "Apparel", "Clothing", and "Fashion" into a three independent definitions. In theory, we could then take each of the three meanings to create unique industry classifications such as "fashion industry", "clothing industry" and "apparel industry". However, some where in the process of developing definitions, we unfortunately had a second thought...
Our
second thought was that we should combine these three similar
words into a single definition; rather
then separating them as uniquely independent definitions. After
all, aren't the words "clothing", "apparel", and "fashion" for
the most part interchangeable. In
fact, we should throw the
word "garment" into the mix because garment
is arguably similar to the words
clothing and apparel.
After we made
the clear decision to create one unified definition to describe the
fashion industry, we further complicated the matter by having yet a
third thought. The dreaded third
thought alerted us to the fact that we did not know if we should
call the industry in which we work the fashion industry, the apparel
industry, the clothing industry, or the garment industry. In our
opinion, the terms are so similar it is difficult to decide
which phrase is best to be the foundation of our definition.
If someone asks you to identify the industry in which you work, how do you respond? Personally, I generally say the Apparel Industry. However, I do not hesitate to respond with Fashion Industry or Clothing Industry. On rare occasion I actually respond with Garment Industry. Anyway, my point is that it is difficult to define the difference between the terms "the fashion industry" vs. "the apparel industry" vs. "the garment industry" etc. After years of thought, we have decided to give up on the effort to define the fashion industry (or what every you want to call it) The fact of the matter is, we are simply not clever enough to figure out the subtle difference between the terms fashion industry, apparel industry, clothing industry etc. Furthermore, we have come to the realization that if we were clever enough to do so, we would have become doctors and not joined the fashion industry in the first place.
Rather then provide one monstrous definition of
the fashion industry, we have compiled various terms and web pages
to assist you. After you educate yourself on the subtleties of
fashion, you can create your own definitions.
